Christine Jurgenson is a two-time world champion

Christine Jurgenson is a two-time world champion who will be competing for a third in less than two months.

And she certainly announced her presence at the Tim Hortons B.C. senior women's curling championship in a big way Wednesday.

Jurgenson's defending provincial champions - featuring third Cheryl Noble, second Pat Sanders, lead Roz Craig and fifth Lena West - is 3-1 at the provincial senior championships, which feature eight women's and eight men's teams. The action continues today at the Kamloops Curling Club.

After splitting Tuesday's openers, Jurgenson's Vancouver rink won twice Wednesday - 11-2 over Vancouver's Karen Miller and 14-1 over Trail's Deb deTremaudan.

Jurgenson has as much experience as any curler at the provincial championships, and is putting it to good use on a tricky ice surface at KCC.

She has represented three provinces at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts national championship - Ontario, Alberta, and B.C. She also played second for her sister - Marilyn Bodogh (Darte) - on Team Canada in 1987 after their Ontario rink won the national title in 1986.

That rink also won the 1986 world women's championship, beating Germany's Andrea Schopp 12-5 in the final in Kelowna.

(Sanders skipped the winning rink at the 1987 Scotties in Lethbridge, then won gold at the world championship in Lake Forest, Ill.)

Since turning 50, Jurgenson has continued to be successful - she played lead on Sanders' rink that won a national senior title in 2008 and world championship in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 2009.

Jurgenson skipped the rink - featuring the same quartet playing different positions - to a Canadian senior championship in 2010, meaning it will compete at the 2011 world championship in St. Paul, Minn., from April 15-24.

And yet, she's at this week's playdowns hoping to get her rink some game experience.

"There's no games to be had in our (division)," says Jurgenson, who lives in Coquitlam, but whose rinkmates are based on Vancouver Island.

"That's why we went through the playdowns again. . . . We wanted to keep our mojo and practice together."

Jurgenson, who is tied for first in the women's competition with Vernon's Sherry Heath, is to play Quesnel's Lori Freeman in Draw 5 today at noon, and New Westminster's Kathy Smiley at 7 p.m.

The rink seemingly had no trouble Wednesday, but Jurgenson was sick for the victory over Miller, so Sanders skipped while West played lead.
