Mother Watches Bullets Hit Daughter

A mother wants answers and justice. Somebody nearly killed her child.
The 14-year-old, named McKyla, was injured in a drive-by shooting Saturday afternoon near 27th Avenue and Fort Street. McKyla remained at the Creighton University Medical Center on Sunday evening. The person who shot her had not been found.
"They pulled a really big bullet out of my daughter," said Melanie Johnson, McKyla's mother. Johnson told KETV Newswatch 7's Jeremy Maskel that she was standing next to her daughter in their front yard when the teen was shot twice.

"She was standing on this side of the door," said Johnson. "The bullets were coming from that way. We couldn't go to the driveway. There's nowhere else to go."
Johnson said a shooter fired at least three times Saturday afternoon. She said her family was spending time outside for the first time this spring when a blue car came around the corner.

"The passenger got out, sat on the window, had the gun up over the top of the car," said Johnson. "[McKyla] was like, 'I'm hit! I'm hit!'"
Johnson said one of the bullets lodged in McKyla's hand and another hit below her left ribs.

"Lungs, heart, all kinds of important things. All located there. And it missed everything," said Johnson. She said her daughter is up and moving in the hospital, and that she has one more surgery before her release.
Johnson said she is turning her attention to catching whoever shot her daughter. She said she also wants to spread the message that the shooting needs to stop.

"People are becoming numb," said Johnson. "People are becoming numb because it's just an every other day thing."
