The Orono barracks of the Maine State Police

The Orono barracks of the Maine State Police dealt with "well over 100" weather-related calls between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Sgt. Sean Hashey said early Friday evening. Of those, 81 were accidents, though none resulted in serious injury, he said.

While handling one of those accidents, Hashey had a close call himself.
It happened while he was overseeing the removal of a vehicle that had slid into the median on Interstate 95, near the Coldbrook Road exit, around noon. Hashey said he was in his police car, which was parked in the southbound passing lane, when he saw a tractor-trailer bearing down on him from behind.

The rig's driver tried to stop when he saw the accident scene ahead but his brakes locked, causing the tractor-trailer to jackknife, Hashey said. The trailer went into the ditch and the cab continued skidding toward the cruiser. It finally stopped within 10 feet of of the sergeant's vehicle.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, who was not injured, was able to resume his run after a wrecker pulled him back onto the highway, Hashey said.

Hashey shrugged off the narrow escape.

"It's not that unusual. We get a lot of close calls," he said, noting that police officers are on the road even in the worst weather.

According to a dispatcher, as of 3 p.m. Friday, the Penobscot Regional Communications Center in Bangor had handled 52 snow-related crashes, only a few of which resulted in injury.

Also problematic were slushy hills that caused cars, trucks and tractor-trailers to get stuck - including a BAT Community Connector bus that was among several vehicles that got hung up about 12:30 p.m. on the hill near the railroad tracks on Wilson Street in Brewer, according to Brewer police Sgt. Anthony Pinette.

George Buban, 77, of Greenbush was traveling south about 9:30 a.m. on Stillwater Avenue near the Orono-Veazie line when he apparently lost control of his vehicle and "went sideways and was struck by another car," Orono police Capt. Josh Ewing said Monday afternoon. "It was minor injury, but they had to use the Jaws [extrication equipment] to get him out."
